Andrew Sykes is the author of three popular cycling-themed travelogues that have taken him across Europe to southern Italy, along the Mediterranean coast from Greece to Portugal and from the continent’s southernmost point at Tarifa in Spain to its northernmost point at Nordkapp in Norway. His latest journey took him on a 5,500km circular tour from the Hook of Holland to the Hook of Holland via The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany.
“Great, entertaining evening, thank you for finding Andrew Sykes. He was very engaging and the presentation was excellent.” (Sheffield CTC)
Riders meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in the café at Queen’s Park Sports Centre S40 2ND (no Sports Centre membership required) setting off at 9:30 am. Unless it’s a planned ride (see Club Rides page) the destination(s) are decided on the day after agreement based on weather conditions and preferences of those present. Don’t forget to pick up a Spire Cycling membership card from the Chair – gets you 10% off in the cafe! Please read here our COVID guidance before riding.
Chesterfield is ideally situated for cycling in many directions. Some rides are ‘Car Assist’ which means we drive a short distance to an alternative starting area and also have riders starting at the main club meeting point at the Queens Park Sports Centre. The ride below to Longnor started in Winster near Matlock and the ride to Thorpe Salvin Hall started from the Ashgate Hospice cafe in Clowne.
Come and Join Us and basic items to carry with you
Many people are now getting back into cycling or may be new to cycling and ride on their own. Riding in a group can make it more sociable and gives a greater feeling of safety. We also know the best/safest ways out of Chesterfield and there are so many quiet lanes when out of the town. We are not a racing club but some ride faster and much further than others and we tend to separate into those groups. Whatever your bike is, electric bikes are welcome (quite a number of club members have them), just make sure it is in good working order, carry a spare tube, pump, tyre levers and in winter a front and rear light. Club members can help with punctures. Always set off with a water bottle, have some ID, an In Case of Emergency Number (ICE), and some cash/card for a café stop. Most club members wear helmets.
Before you decide to ride with us or for further information
You may be concerned about a number of things with regard to riding with a group one of which could be the average pace of the various groups – they can ease any concerns that you might have. Please make contact before you turn up and please read our “Riding Etiquette” page.
We are a friendly welcoming bunch offering advice and encouragement to new riders. Amongst our ranks there is an intriguing amount of route, technical, and most importantly cafe knowledge, adding that extra something to your cycling experience. Non-members are very welcome so why not experience a couple of rides with the club – it may be just what you are looking for! Our club membership is only £5 per year.
